The Toronto Raptors acquired a new player on NBA trade deadline day. But for most observers and fans, it will just be another day that the team did not trade Andrea Bargnani.
Bargnani was the logical piece to be moved following last month’s trade for Rudy Gay. It was so logical, in fact, that general manager Bryan Colangelo brought the open secret into the light by saying out loud on the night of the Gay trade that the Raptors were considering trading Bargnani. That was 22 days before Thursday’s trade deadline. And, for Bargnani, the Raptors could not scratch up a deal that would make them tangibly better, now or in the future.
The deal that they did make — acquiring point guard Sebastian Telfair from Phoenix for Hamed Haddadi and a conditional second-round draft pick — does not move the needle in any meaningful way. It could…
