Iran even closer to a nuclear weapon

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has called on the United States for backup in an attack on Iran. The United States and other countries have denied his request and have asked him to wait for the sanctions imposed to take effect.

President Obama said at State of Union in 2012, “We will stand for the rights and dignities of all human beings men and women, Christians, Muslims and Jews. We will support policy that lead to strong and stable democracies and open markets because tyranny is no match for liberty and we will safe guard Americas against those who threaten our citizens, our friends and our interests. Look at Iran. Through the power of our diplomacy a world that was once divided about how to deal with Iran’s nuclear program now stands as one.”

The state of Iran’s economy has plummeted significantly due to sanctions imposed by the UN (United Nations). According to an article on, “The Iranian rial fell 5% to an all time low against the US dollar Saturday, according to financial websites. The value of the rial has fallen by almost 57% since June last year, leading to big price increases for imported goods. Israel’s finance minister, Yuval Steinitz, said Iran’s economy “is not collapsing, but it is on the verge of collapse”.

How Social Media is affecting the U.S Presidential Election

There’s no doubt social media has had a significant impact on many persons’ lives, some, even to the point of persuading their political views. The presidential election in the United States will be on November 6, 2012 and both parties are trying to earn every vote in the final weeks of the race to the White House. One of the ways in which they are doing so is through Social Media. Whether it be through the millions of dollars spent on SuperPAC‘s (Political Action Committee) on television or sending tweets via Twitter, the two parties are and have been continuously pushing their message through to the masses via social media.

An instance of how social Media has had an impact on the race to the White House was in the Vice Presidential Debate on Thursday, October 11, 2012.

In an excerpt taken from an article on, quickly after Joe Biden’s comment “With all due respect, that’s a bunch of malarkey”, viewers rushed to their computers to find out what ‘malarkey’ meant. An article on recapping the debate said “‘Malarkey’, it turns out, was the third-most-searched debate-related term of the night on Google. It was also trending on Twitter for a good chunk of time.”

According to, Joe Biden’s “malarkey” comment generated 31 008 TPM (tweets per-minute) of 3.5 million tweets tweeted during the debate from 9PM to 10:32PM EDT in Veeps, Dan-ville.

Viewers also had mixed emotions regarding Joe Biden’s demeanor and attitude towards Congressman Paul Ryan.

“The sighing, the eye-rolling, the grinning. I don’t know if the vice president knew that there was a camera on him the whole time, that there was a split screen,” senior Romney campaign adviser Russ Schriefer said.

“Even if we thought he was making good points, I think that they stepped on his good points. He was trying to cram everything in that he could that wasn’t in the last debate to try and get it all out at once. But I don’t think he made any kind of coherent argument as to why the Obama-Biden ticket should be re-elected” he added.

“The Vice-President came and showed fight. He showed his boss what it is to engage and engage and engage and attack and attack and attack” CNN’s Chief National Correspondent John King said.

Here, we can see that different viewers had mixed emotions of how Vice President Joe Biden performed in the debate. As shown in the chart above tracking Debate related tweets on twitter, we see that Social Media is one of, if not the number one means in which both political parties’ messages are delivered to “move the masses” to go out and vote for their party on November 6, 2012.

All we can do now is wait and see how all this social media ‘hoopla’ will affect the Presidential Election on November 6.
